FACTS If every household in the U.S. replaced one incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL), it would prevent enough pollution to equal removing 800,000 cars from the road.* If every American family switched 1 light bulb to CFL's, we could save 600 million dollars in annual energy costs - enough to light about 3 million homes for an entire year!* Lighting accounts for 20% to 25% of all electricity consumed in the United States. Energy Star qualified CFLs produce about 75 percent less heat and can cut additional energy costs associated with home cooling. * CFLs provide the same amount of light (lumens) as standard incandescent bulbs, but have lower wattage ratings. This means they use less energy and cause less pollution. If you are unfamiliar with the best CFL wattage to use for your lighting needs, always refer to the lumen, or light output on the product packaging as your guide. For example, most 60-watt incandescents provide around 800 lumens. *www.energystar.gov ***www.ornl.gov |
