Green Light Christmas

Green Light New Orleans has partnered with Academy of the Sacred Heart to create a Christmas tree display for Magazine Street this Holiday season.

The trees will be displayed along the 2000-2100 blocks of Magazine Street for the month of December.
Designed by artist Mark Kirk and built by members of Sacred Heart’s Environmental Club, the trees are made of recycled light bulbs removed from households that participated in Green Light New Orleans’ free energy efficient light bulb program. The repurposed Christmas trees will be displayed along Magazine Street’s Green Light District to create awareness for Green Light New Orleans’ mission and their Citizens for Light initiative.

The partnership originally began when Sacred Heart committed to installing 3,000 energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs as part of Green Light’s Citizens for Light, a campaign that aims to install 343,829 light bulbs by the end of April 2012. The campaign’s goal is to change one light bulb per citizen in Orleans Parish in an effort to expand the movement and to demonstrate the effects that sustainable living can have on a community. Mark Kirk, an artist known for his artwork made of repurposed materials, reuses Green Light New Orleans’ light bulbs to create notable lamps. Mark Kirk joined the project by request of Green Light New Orleans and HERO|farm, a local advertising company doing pro-bono work to promote the Citizens for Light campaign.
