Solar electric systems, also known as photovoltaic (PV) systems, convert sunlight into electricity. The basic PV or solar cell typically produces only a small amount of power. To produce more power, solar cells (about 40) can be interconnected to form panels or modules. Several of these panels (called an “array”) can be mounted together at a fixed angle facing south, or they can be mounted on a tracking device that follows the sun, allowing them to capture the most sunlight over the course of a day.
Making Solar Panels a Cost-Effective Choice for Your Home:
~Combined federal and state tax credits will cover 80% of the cost of installation~
1. Before selecting system components and sizing a PV system for an existing home, you should evaluate your energy consumption patterns and try to reduce your home's electricity use. If you reduce your electricity loads, you can generally buy a smaller, less expensive PV system.
2. Energy Star Federal Tax Credit for Consumer Energy Efficiency
Credit: 30% of cost with no upper limit
expires December 12, 2016

3. Louisiana State Tax Credit for Solar Energy Systems on Residential property
Credit: 50% of the first $25,000 of the cost of each system in the form of a refundable tax credit (if you don’t have tax liability you will receive a check as an overpayment.)
