Food

Problem: Many residents live in neighborhoods that are swamped with highly processed convenience foods shipped thousands of miles and saturated with sugar, salt, and fat, but they have little or no access to a sustainable source of fresh, healthy vegetables. Only 19% of Orleans Parish residents eat 5 servings of fruits or vegetables each day according to a 2013 Community Health Improvement Report. Research indicates that lack of fresh food leads to diet-related illness and death.

Solution: Backyard vegetable gardens
By growing food at home, residents become their own source of fresh produce, saving money on grocery costs and reducing their carbon footprint by minimizing the distance food travels before it reaches their plate.
